Parking fine from a scan car: when is it wrong?

The most common scan-car errors and how to prove your assessment is unjust.

How a scan car works

A scan car drives through parking zones and reads licence plates with cameras. Each plate is checked against the payment and permit systems. If the system finds no valid payment, an assessment follows (after a check).

The system is fast, but not infallible. It is precisely the automation that creates errors that make for a valid objection.

The most common errors

  • You were paying just then. The app session started a minute after the scan, or the payment had not been processed yet.
  • Wrong plate in the app. One typo (0 vs O, a missing digit) and the system does not link your payment to your car.
  • Wrong zone or tariff. You paid for an adjacent zone.
  • Loading and unloading. You stopped briefly to load or unload, which is allowed in many places.
  • Valid permit. You hold a resident or business permit that was not properly linked.
  • Broken meter or outage. Paying on the spot was not possible.

How to prove it

Evidence is everything. Gather what fits your situation:

  • A screenshot of your parking app with time, plate and zone.
  • A bank statement or payment confirmation.
  • A photo of the situation (sign, yellow line, loading bay, broken meter).
  • Your permit number and validity date.

The more concrete your evidence, the stronger your objection. See the complete step-by-step to object.

Frequently asked questions

Can I object if I started paying just too late?

Often yes. A screenshot of your app with the exact time can show that the scan and your payment just missed each other. That is a common, valid reason.

I typed the wrong plate in the app. Does that stand a chance?

Yes, if you can show you did pay and that it was an obvious typo. Add the payment confirmation and the correct plate.

Do scan cars really make mistakes?

Yes. Timing differences, permit-linking errors and wrong zones occur. That is exactly why it pays to review an assessment critically.
